Own a Home

Home ownership is the quintessential "American dream". On a very broad scale, owning your home is a testament to the financial independence of both you and our country. On a smaller scale, your home can be the most unique expression of who you are as a person. These are all wonderful attributes of home ownership that surround us from the time we are children!

However, common home ownership issues, from what spring bulbs to plant to whether or not to run for President of your homeowners' association, are not always given equal glory. There is often no handbook to inform you of when garbage day is or who to call for a water heater tune-up.

In this section of our site, we aim to help you extend your dream of home ownership beyond closing day by providing you with some resources as a home owner.

Cleaning Tips

Air Conditioning Tip For Your Home

In the cooling season, use cost-effective conservation measures like shading the East and West windows and setting your air conditioner at 78 degrees or higher. Keep the house closed tight during the day. Don’t let in unwanted heat and humidity. Ventilate at night, either naturally or with fans.

If you need or want to replace your existing air conditioner’s outdoor compressor unit, make sure the indoor blower coil unit is compatible with the new outdoor unit. A highly efficient outdoor unit will not achieve its rated efficiency if paired with an older blower coil.

Electrical Tip

Is your circuit breaker tripping or fuse blowing? This can be caused by several reasons;

1. there may be a short circuit,

2. an overloaded circuit,

3. or a weak breaker.

Overloaded circuits occur when too much power is running through an electrical wire. To protect the wire, the circuit breaker does its job by detecting the overload and tripping off. The solution to this problem is to remove some of the things that are connected to the overloaded wires and add another set of wires to bring power to them. For this you'll need a qualified electrician.

Carpet and Upholstery Care

Vacuum your carpets at least once a week - up to 80% of carpet dirt is loose and removable with regular vacuuming.

When vacuuming, go with the pile grain to remove surface soils and then again against the grain to remove deeper, embedded particles.

Rotate your furniture occasionally to prevent premature carpet wear and soiling in regular traffic areas of your house.

Plumbing Tip

Not getting good water pressure at your kitchen or bathroom faucet? Remove the aerator and check for sediment particles in it. These particles can restrict water flow and pressure.

Running ice cubes through your garbage disposal once a month can help keep unpleasant odors from building up.
